Як повідомляє The Washington Post, суперечка виникла після інтерв’ю, яке американський президент дав для NBC News. У ньому він прокоментував звільнення директора ФБР Джеймса Комі, але його слова суперечили заявам, які до цього робили його офіційні представники щодо цієї теми. Його помічники говорили про те, що рішення звільнити Джеймса Комі не пов'язане зі скандалом щодо зв'язків між аериканським президентом та Росією. Натомість, в інтерв’ю Трамп прямо заявив, що його «втомили ці чутки та спроби демократів виправдати ними свій програш на виборах». 

Дональд Трамп написав у своєму Twitter запропонував позбутися від щоденних брифінгів для преси в Білому домі й інформаувати громадськість про останні рішення тільки через «письмові відповіді». Він зазначив у іншому твіті, що є дуже активним президентом, навколо нього багато подій і тому працівники його команди не можуть «говорити з ідеальною точністю». 

Раніше Дональд Трамп відовився від участі в традиційноу щорічному обіді з пулом журналістів з Асоціації кореспондентів Білого дому. Причини такого рішення він не пояснив.
