Кандидат от оппозиции на выборах президента Гондураса Сальвадор Насралла заявил, что требует от властей либо пересчета голосов, либо проведения второго тура. О непризнании итогов оппозиция заявляла и ранее, однако впервые было выдвинуто такое требование. Законом второй тур не предусмотрен, поскольку победителем признается тот из кандидатов, кто набрал простое большинство голосов. Накануне высший избирательный суд Гондураса подсчитал все поданные на выборах президента страны бюллетени. По предоставленной информации, действующего президента и его соперника от оппозиционного альянса разделяют полтора процента голосов.Но эти результаты не означают пока признания Эрнандеса победителем: одновременно с объявлением результатов был начат процесс сверки свыше 5 000 протоколов избирательных комиссий. Эта процедура была инициирована все тем же высшим избирательным судом страны. Данные об итогах голосования были опубликованы с задержкой, которая вызвала массовые протесты в Гондурасе.

Власти также на несколько дней приостановили действие конституционных прав и ввели комендантский час.
