Інші кошти, отримані від флешмобу, дозволили вченим відкрити ген, пов'язаний з розвитком бічного аміотрофічного склерозу - NEK1.

Найближчим часом дослідження цього гена допоможе вченим зрозуміти, як виникає невиліковне захворювання, відоме як аміотрофічний склероз або хвороба Лу Геріга. 

Вивчення гена може призвести до подальшого винаходу способу лікування цього захворювання. 

Дослідження могло б і не бути, якби не флешмоб - саме за рахунок коштів, отриманих через Ice Bucket Challedge, профінансувала роботу асоціація ALS, яка займається генними захворюваннями.
