Жители 1 342 городов, включая такие крупные, как Рим, Милан, Неаполь, Болонья, Турин, Триест, голосуют в воскресенье на выборах в муниципальные органы власти. К избирательным урнам приглашены более 13 млн человек, уточняет агентство ANSA.

Участки открылись в 07:00 (08:00 мск) и будут работать до 23:00 (00:00 мск понедельника), затем начнется подсчет голосов. В городах с населением менее 15 тысяч человек мэры будут избраны простым большинством голосов. В более крупных центрах, где ни один из кандидатов не наберет свыше 50% голосов, предусмотрен второй тур, который пройдет 19 июня.

Основная предвыборная борьба между кандидатами от разных политических сил развернулась в Риме, Милане, Неаполе. Премьер-министр Маттео Ренци заявляет, что итог этих выборов, даже если кандидаты от его правящей Демократической партии (ДП) не одержат победу, никак не скажется на устойчивости правительства.

По прогнозам наблюдателей, главной характерной чертой этого голосования станет низкая явка избирателей. Оппоненты Ренци обвиняют правительство в том, что оно намеренно добивается выгодной для ДП низкой явки, назначив волеизъявление на 5 июня. Ведь 2 июня в стране отмечается национальный праздник - День Республики, в связи с чем многие жители городов (особенно Милана и Рима) разъехались на каникулы и просто не успеют вернуться, чтобы проголосовать.
