Представники опозиції отримали більше половини місць в радах у боротьбі з провладними кандидатами.

Станом на 5 годину ранку вони отримали 283 місця на противагу приблизно 32 портфелям, що здобули їхні опоненти.

Проголосувати після шести місяців антиурядових протестів прийшла рекордна кількість виборців. Явка становила 71%, що на 24% більше, чим на виборах 2015 року.

Окружні ради Гонконгу контролюють окремі витрати і вирішують ряд місцевих питань, таких як транспорт. Також вони служать платформою для поширення політичного впливу в місті, яке підпорядковується комуністичному Китаю.

Деякі кандидати вже заявили, що результат голосування схожий на голосування підтримки протестного руху. Вони вважають, що ця перемога може вплинути на владу міста, яка підтримує Пекін.
