Американская компания Facebook, владелец крупнейшей в мире социальной сети, начинает работу над созданием спутника, который поможет обеспечить доступ к интернету жителям Африки.

Проект разрабатывается Facebook совместно с французской телекоммуникационной компанией Eutelsat Communications в рамках многолетнего соглашения, сообщается в совместном пресс-релизе, пишет Сегодня.

Eutelsat выведет на околоземную орбиту геостационарный спутник связи AMOS-6, задачей которого будет обеспечение стабильного интернет-соединения на территории Западной, Восточной и Южной Африки. Для доставки космического аппарата планируется использовать ракету-носитель Falcon 9 производства SpaceX.

Новую систему планируется ввести в эксплуатацию во второй половине 2016 года.
