Вчені встановили, скільки інформації може зберігати людський мозок. Він виявився в 10 разів більшим, ніж вважали раніше. Повністю заповнити пам’ять інформацією неможливо навіть протягом кількох життів.

Вчені з Інституту біологічних досліджень Солка в Каліфорнії представили нову оцінку обсягу інформації, що його здатний зберігати людський мозок.

Використовуючи принципи теорії інформації, вчені провели аналіз синапсів гіпокампа щура – ключової області мозку, що відповідає за навчання та пам’ять. У новій моделі вони врахували шум, властивий багатьом сигналам і клітинам мозку, і застосували біт – дискретну одиницю інформації – для вимірювання обсягу інформації, що зберігається в синапсі. Ця частина лімбічної системи головного мозку відповідає за емоції, навчання та пам’ять.

Вони оцінили силу зв’язків, які виникають між двома нейронами або між нейроном та ефекторною клітиною, що отримує сигнал. Кожна з них містила приблизно однакову кількість інформації від 4,1 до 4,6 біта. 

Підрахувавши, вони визначили, що мозок людини здатний зберігати інформацію обсягом один петабайт. Для порівняння, щоб зберегти всі існуючі веб-сайти у світі, достатньо 5 петабайт!

Отримані результати дозволяють припустити, що мозок здатний зберігати вдесятеро більше інформації, ніж вважалося раніше.
