В Сирии во вторник, 3 июня, пройдут первые президентские выборы на альтернативной основе. Избирательные участки открылись по всей стране в 7 часов утра (8:00 мск) и закроются в 19:00 (20:00 мск), однако в случае высокой явки время голосования может быть продлено на 5 часов до полуночи, сообщает Новый регион.

Количество зарегистрированных избирателей - 15,8 млн человек (население страны на 2012 г. - 22,4 млн человек). В крупных городах Дамаске и Алеппо созданы 5235 участков для голосования, по всей стране их количество достигает 9601.

На пост руководителя страны, где с марта 2011 года продолжается вооруженный конфликт, претендуют три кандидата, одобренные сирийским парламентом, в их числе действующий президент - Башар Асад. Его соперники - 54-летний профессор Дамасского университета Хасан Ан-Нури и 45-летний депутат парламента Махер Хаджар.

За организацию выборов отвечает Избирательная комиссия во главе с Хишамом Шааром. Контроль над проведением выборов возложен на Высший конституционный суд.
