Український інститут промислової власності зареєстрував патент на промисловий зразок під назвою "знак номерний транспортних засобів". Власниками патенту вказано Департамент ДАІ МВС України і ТОВ "Голден флора". 

Як повідомляють "Наші гроші. Львів", загалом зареєстровано 13 варіантів номерного знаку для авто, зокрема й такі, де замість прапора України зображено "зоряне кільце" Євросоюзу, яке використовують у країнах ЄС для авто номерних знаків. Та саме за такі номерні знаки (із символікою ЄС) у  Департаменті ДАІ обіцяли штрафувати водіїв під час початку  Революції Гідності у грудні 2013 року.

Тоді наприкінці 2013 року Мін’юст додав нові буквосполучення на номерні знаки. З того часу про жодні зміни у зовнішньому оформленні номерних знаків для автомобілів не повідомлялось.
