Художник Майкл Мандіберг роздрукує англомовну «Вікіпедію» для своєї виставки «From Aaaaa! To ZZZap!», яка відкриється в галереї Denny Gallery на Манхеттені,пише Media Sapiens

На сайті галереї повідомляється, що Мандіберг роздрукує не всю електронну енциклопедію, а тільки її невелику частину, однак і вона займе не менше 106 томів по 700 сторінок у кожному. Повна роздруківка склала би близько 76000 томів, і то за умови, що текст на кожній сторінці буде розташований у три колонки.

Роздрукувати «Вікіпедію» художник вирішив для того, щоби показати наскільки великим є об’єм електронного контенту.

«Навіть якщо ми не будемо роздруковувати всю енциклопедію, а заповнимо паперовими томами тільки одну шафу, люди зможуть уявити істинний об’єм інформації. Проблема в тому, що об’єм накопичених знань перевищив наші можливості зберігати їх у вигляді роздрукованих матеріалів на книжкових полицях», - пояснив він в інтерв’ю The New York Times.

Процес друку 106 томів «Вікіпедії» триватиме більше 10 днів. Відвідувачі галереї зможуть купити будь-яку з книг за 80 доларів. Повне зібрання книг коштуватиме 500 тисяч доларів.

До речі, два дні тому, 18 червня, міжнародна некомерційна організація Wikimediaоголосила про перехід всіх своїх ресурсів (включно з Вікіпедією) на захищений протокол HTTPS. Така увага до захисту інформації — це відповідь на підвищений інтерес з боку урядів деяких країн, а також на існуючу загрозу спостереження і цензури, кажуть представники Wikimedia.
