17 червня власником американських видань Los Angeles Times та San Diego Union-Tribune став мультимільярдер Патрік Сун-Шонг (Patrick Soon-Shiong).
У посланні до читачів пан Сун-Шонг пише, що вважає це кульмінацією американської мрії іммігранта: «З цього дня починається наша важлива робота з захисту та розбудови багатої історії незалежної журналістики… Я вважаю, що фейкові новини — це рак сучасності, а соціальні мережі — канали для метастазів. Такі організації як The Times та Union-Tribune зараз більш важливі, ніж будь-коли. Вони повинні бути бастіонами редакційної цілісності та незалежності, захищати нашу демократію та забезпечують антидот до дезінформації».
Патрік Сун-Шонг придбав ЗМІ у холдингу Tronc Inc., тому що вважає LA Times газетою, яка може мати вплив у національному та міжнародному масштабах. «Я взагалі не розглядав цю транзакцію з фінансової точки зору», — каже він.
Всього на придбання трьох медіа — LA Times, The San Diego Union-Tribune та іспаномовного видання Hoy — він витратив близько півмільярда доларів.
