Британська газета The Independent продала частку власності від 25 до 50% бізнесмену із Саудівської Аравії Султану Мухаммаду Абульядаілу (Sultan Muhammad Abuljadayel), пише Media Sapiens
 

Повні деталі щодо угоди не розкривають, однак за даними The Guardian бізнесмен заплатив за акції компанії близько £100 млн. Також невідомо, чи Султан Мухаммад Абульядаіл купив акції у материнської компанії, чи перекупив їх у когось з вже наявних інвесторів The Independent. Серед інших відомих акціонерів компанії - росіянин Євген Лебедєв та британець Джастін Баям Шоу (Justin Byam Shaw).

Редакція газети запевнила, що угода ніяк не вплине на незалежність роботи видання, оскільки відповідні умови були прописані в окремому контракті. Водночас, угода «забезпечить стратегічне зростання The Independent і Independent Digital News».

Нагадаємо, у березні минулого року The Independent відмовилася від друкованої версії. З початку 90-х років газета пережила серйозні фінансові труднощі, її тираж падав, і в 2010 році газету придбав російський бізнесмен Олександр Лебедєв за номінальну ціну в 1 фунт стерлінгів (близько 1,5 долара). У 2015 році щоденний тираж газети впав нижче 58 тисяч екземплярів. Тим часом, на думку власників газети, її онлайн версія збирає все більше читачів.
