Она использовала сканирующий элемент, который был установлен в приемном и передающем устройстве. Такое телевидение было немым и не позволяло передавать звук, а через низкую распределительную способность получило название малострочного.

Тем не менее, технология получила распространение в газетной полиграфии для передачи фотографий без полутонов. Сканирование фотоснимка занимало всего несколько минут и позволяло получать контрастный черно-белый снимок приемлемого для газеты качества. Заслуга Берда заключалась в том, что 26 января 1926 года ему удалось передать движущееся изображение в своей лаборатории в Лондоне. Уже через пару лет, 12 июня 1928 года в эфир вышла первая вещательная станция, использующая стандарт механического телевидения. Произошло это в Чикаго.
