Число активных пользователей мессенджера WhatsApp достигло одного миллиарда человек. Об этом сообщается в пресс-релизе, поступившем в «Ленту.ру».

Приложение доступно пользователям на 53 языках и 7 мобильных платформах. Ежедневно в мессенджере пересылается 42 миллиарда сообщений, 1,6 миллиарда фотографий и 250 миллионов видеозаписей.

WhatsApp был разработан бывшим хакером Яном Кумом в 2009 году, к которому позже присоединился его бывший коллега по компании Yahoo Брайан Эктон.

К ноябрю 2011 года WhatsApp стал самым популярным платным социальным приложением для iOS, а количество загрузок мессенджера на Android достигло 10 миллионов. В феврале 2014 года WhatsApp был куплен социальной сетью Facebook за 19 миллиардов долларов.

В январе 2016 года мессенджер стал полностью бесплатным, отменив ежегодную абонентскую плату в размере одного доллара после года безвозмездного использования.

В середине декабря 2015 года мессенджер был на 48 часов блокирован властями Бразилии, где им пользуются 93 процента населения страны. Блокировку ввели в связи с нежеланием компании предоставить суду сведения для криминального расследования.
