Колишній віце-президент США Джо Байден отримав формальну перемогу у праймеріз Демократичної партії, таким чином офіційно ставши кандидатом від партії на виборах президента США, який змагатиметься з Дональдом Трампом.

Згідно з американською системою виборів, кандидатові необхідно заручитися підтримкою щонайменш 1991 делегатів.

Вчора Байден перетнув цю межу після того, як ще декілька штатів повідомили результати праймеріз.

"Це було честю, змагатися поруч із найбільш талановитими кандидатами, яких будь-коли мала Демократична партія. І я можу з гордістю сказати, що на ці загальні вибори ми йдемо об’єднаними", - сказав Байден, коментуючи свою перемогу.

Де-факто Джо Байден став основним кандидатом ще у квітні, коли його головний суперник, сенатор Берні Сандерс, оголосив про вихід з перегонів, а потім підтримав кандидатуру Байдена. Згодом з офіційною підтримкою Байдена виступила ще одна кандидатка від демократичної партії, сенаторка Елізабет Воррен, а також попередній президент США Барак Обама.
