Анализ потребительских обзоров показал, что 9 из 10 ведущих британских рецензентов Amazon вычеркнули из списка пятизвездочные отзывы на продукты малоизвестных китайских брендов. FT нашла те же продукты в группах и форумах Facebook, которые предлагают бесплатные товары или деньги в обмен на рейтинги. Кроме того, маркетплейс удалил тысячи рейтингов, проанализированных в исследовании платных обзоров, проведенном Университетом Южной Калифорнии и Калифорнийским университетом в Лос-Анджелесе.
Положительные отзывы используются в алгоритме ранжирования продуктов: за ярлык «Выбор Amazon» поставщики в условиях жесткой конкуренции готовы платить. Один из самых активных в Великобритании рецензентов Джастин Фрайер только в августе оценил товары на общую сумму $19 740. Он публиковал обзоры в среднем каждые четыре часа. Многие из оцененных им товаров позже были выставлены на продажу на eBay. Фрайер отрицает участие в заказных отзывах, ссылаясь на однофамильца. Однако свою историю отзывов на Amazon он оперативно удалил.
