Подавляющее большинство проголосовавших на референдуме жителей Пуэрто-Рико желают, чтобы их территория официально вошла в состав США в качестве 51-го штата. Сейчас Пуэрто-Рико обладает статусом "неинкорпорированной организованной территории", то есть находится под управлением США, не являясь их неотъемлемой частью.

 

Явка на референдуме, который прошел в воскресенье, 11 июня, составила всего 23 процента избирателей, а сам референдум носил рекомендательный характер. Однако около 97 процентов из полумиллиона проголосовавших отдали голоса за вхождение в состав США. За сохранение статус-кво и проведение еще одного референдума высказались по полтора процента голосовавших.

"Будет крайне непоследовательно, если Вашингтон, требуя соблюдения демократии в других частях мира, проигнорирует то легитимное право на самоопределение, которое сегодня было выражено на американской территории Пуэрто-Рико", -  заявил губернатор Рикардо Роселло.
