Лідер Альянсу лібералів та демократів за Європу Гі Верховстадт відкликав свою кандидатуру на пост голови законодавчого органу ЄС.
Про це оголосив у вівторок перед початком голосування чинний президент Європарламенту Мартін Шульц, повідомляє власний кореспондент Укрінформу.
"Пан Верховстадт щойно повідомив мені, що він відкликав свою кандидатуру", - повідомив Шульц.
Це рішення викликало бурхливу реакцію серед депутатів, які розділилися, висловлюючи підтримку, а також обурення діям лідера лібералів.
Відтак на даний момент кандидатами на пост голови ЄП залишаються сім кандидатів від решти політичних груп.
Передвиборча стратегія бельгійського політика Верховстадта полягала у тому, що він би міг стати компромісною фігурою на пост президента ЄП поміж найбільшими фракціями Європейської народної партії та Прогресивного альянсу соціалістів та демократів.
