Почесним спікером федерального парламенту Канади став багаторічний депутат Моріль Беланже, хворий на невиліковну хворобу, що позбавила його голосу.

Беланже є членом парламенту від столичного округу впродовж 21 року і в грудні балотувався на посаду спікера, втім відкликав кандидатуру, коли дізнався про свій діагноз - бічний аміотрофічний склероз. Ця хвороба поступово позбавляє людини здатності контролювати м’язи.

Спілкується депутат за допомогою голосового генератора, під’єднаного до планшетного комп’ютера.

«Я вірив, що після 21 року служіння у парламенті я мав усі необхідні навички та вміння, необхідні хорошому спікеру. Я також хотів покращити регламент та захищати права усіх депутатів, аби вони могли краще виконувати свої обов’язки», - розповів Беланже про мотиви свого балотування.

Минулого місяця депутат подав свій перший законопроект у новому парламенті і незабаром має взяти участь у дебатах з цього приводу. Це стане першим подібним випадком у історії канадського парламентаризму.
