Такое распоряжение сделала главный редактор издания The New York Times Джил Абрамсон, которая считает сложившуюся практику недопустимой.

Ситуация, в которой источники и пресс-службы требуют предоставлять им материалы для проверки постфактум, ведет к тому, что у читателей складывается ошибочное представление, будто бы издание позволяет источникам влиять на содержание публикаций, считает Абрамсон.

В письме к работникам глобального издания она также указывает на то, что пресс-секретари, требующие согласовывать цитаты и интервью, зачастую выходят за рамки допустимого и мешают работе журналистов.

Главный редактор пишет и о том, что она понимает риск, связанный с решением отказывать в согласовании реплик: количество интервью и комментариев может резко сократиться. Тем не менее с 20 сентября 2012 года журналисты обязаны отказывать источникам в требовании согласовать материалы. Работники редакции должны ссылаться на официальную политику издания. Однако и здесь допускаются исключения: материал можно согласовать, если источник в противном случае не даст изданию опубликовать информацию, являющуюся важной для читателей. Каждый такой случай будет обсуждаться с руководством The New York Times отдельно.
