Президент Боливии Эво Моралес подарил Папе Римскому Франциску, находящемуся с визитом в стране, деревянное распятие в виде серпа и молота. Об этом сообщает Лента.ру.

Подарок вызвал критику со стороны оппозиционных боливийских СМИ, которые назвали его «коммунистическим распятием». Министр связи Боливии Марианела Пако в ответ напомнила, что крест является копией работы священника-иезуита Луиса Эспинала, убитого в Ла-Пасе в 1980 году за правозащитную деятельность.

«Этот крест в виде серпа и молота имеет очень глубокий смысл», — отметила министр, пояснив, что серп и молот символизируют союз церкви и «смиренных работников», которыми являются рабочие и крестьяне. При этом Пако подчеркнула, что крест был подарен Понтифику, потому что он является «Папой бедняков», передает Notimex.

Представитель Ватикана Федерико Ломбарди заявил в четверг на пресс-конференции, что Папа Франциск не отреагировал негативным образом на подарок.

Папа Римский Франциск совершает турне по странам Латинской Америки. В четверг, выступая в боливийском городе Санта-Крус, он попросил прощения за преступления, совершенные Католической церковью во время колонизации Америки.
