Репортер New York Times Девід Сігал без жодного досвіду в блокчейні створив власну "хайпову" криптовалюту Idiot Coin, витративши на це мінімальні гроші. Його мета полягала в тому, щоб показати ненадійність подібних інвестицій.

 

Як повідомляє Business Insider, великий матеріал Сігала вийшов під заголовком "Розорення в Кріптоландіі" (Going for Broke in Cryptoland). Журналіст планував завершити експеримент так, щоб ніхто не зазнав збитків. Однак, за його словами, збитки від інвестицій в "хайпові монети" імовірно обчислюються сотнями мільйонів доларів на рік. Десятки подібних монет створюються щодня, майже без нагляду. Мільйони людей вкладають в них гроші, бажаючи збагачення.  

Найчастіше подібні монети втрачають всю свою вартість за пару тижнів, а їх розробники таким чином заробляють десятки тисяч доларів, і навіть більше.

Для створення своєї монети Idiot Coin журналіст проконсультувався з юристами в Лондоні і в США з приводу легальності такої діяльності. Як виявилося, в будь-якій країні регулюючі органи можуть подати на розробників монет до суду.

Зрештою розробник заплатив 300 доларів за видання 21 мільйона своїх монет. Його партнер Ден Арреола тим часом попередив потенційних інвесторів про ризики, випустивши на YouTube "гайд" по створенню і просуванню шахрайських монет.

Крім того, журналіст запустив сайт Coinforidiots.com і заплатив блогеру за просування в TikTok. Просування також здійснювалося на Reddit і в Telegram. Реклама Idiot Coin несе відверто знущальний характер - розробник запевнив, що "безумовно не полетить на Місяць" і наполегливо рекомендує не купувати її. Проте у Telegram-каналу з'явилися понад 300 фоловерів. Багато хто всерйоз цікавилися, як купити її, хоч адміністратор каналу і відмовляв фоловерів від такого кроку.

Найвідомішою " хайповою" криптовалютою на сьогодні є Dogecoin, який був створений в 2013 році на основі Litecoin. Мільярдер Ілон Маск називає її своєю улюбленою криптовалютою, тому що у неї є "меми і собаки".
