Гросмейстера відсторонили за порушення дрес-коду: Карлсен відмовився перевдягатися. 

"Я поїду куди-небудь, де погода краща, ніж у Нью-Йорку. Усе гаразд, FIDE може висувати свої правила, я не проти. Моя відповідь — чудово, я йду", — заявив він.

На початку 2024 року Магнус Карлсен відмовився від участі у Турнірі претендентів-2024 через те, що "не отримує задоволення", а у 2022 році Карлсен відмовився від захисту титулу чемпіона світу. Тоді він заявив, що незадоволений форматом матчу за чемпіонство.

Карлсен заявляв про свою підтримку України у війні проти РФ. Він закликав не знімати санкції з спортсменів Росії та Білорусі.
