Помилка сталася через те, що додаток Apple Stocks використовує дані з Yahoo Finance, а той, в свою чергу, не встиг оновити останні дані з торгів. Apple викупила частину своїх цінних паперів, тому кількість вільних акцій компанії на ринку зменшилася. На момент написання новин ціна акції становила $203,45, але враховуючи скорочення кількості вільних акцій, для капіталізації в трильйон доларів їх ціна мали вирости до позначки в $207,05. На момент виходу новин вартість Apple становила близько 950 мільярдів доларів.

Тим не менш, до кінця дня ціна акцій Apple виросла й капіталізація досягла ринкової вартості в трильйон доларів. Таким чином вона стала першою американською компанією, яка вартує таку суму.

Після цього голова компанії Тім Кук надіслав працівникам листа, в якому зазначив, що фінансова віддача - це лише результат інновацій Apple й її не варто вважати мірилом успіху. Він подякував усім працівникам та партнерам Apple за роботу.
