В Австралии во вторник появилась партия мусульман. Новое объединение называется "Партия мусульман Австралии" и, по словам его лидера, собирается принимать участие в выборах в сенат страны, пишет ВВС

На момент возникновения партии в Австралии живёт около полумиллиона мусульман, однако из 250 депутатов парламента мусульманином себя называет всего один человек.

Основатель партии, житель Сиднея Диа Мохаммед говорит, что его решение создать партию по религиозному принципу было обусловлено, помимо прочего, недавними нападениями в Париже. По словам Мохаммеда, он хочет найти ответы на те вопросы, с которыми столкнутся мусульмане всего мира после этой трагедии.

Лидер партии хочет дать мусульманам Австралии больше возможностей быть услышанными. "Может быть, мы пока не знаем, как это делать, или мы слишком разрознены, но я надеюсь, что теперь у нас появится такая возможность", - говорит он.

Другой причиной создания партии Мохаммед называет возникновение в стране сразу нескольких новых партий с антиисламской программой.

Впрочем, журналисты отмечают, что шансы Мохаммеда на избрание в сенат сейчас достаточно малы. Чтобы принять участие в выборах, партии необходимо собрать всего 500 подписей, однако даже в округе с самым высоким мусульманским населением в стране потенциальный электорат партии достигает всего 20% от общего числа избирателей
