У сепаратистському регіоні Грузії Абхазії проходить референдум з питання проведення дострокових виборів президента.

Так званий президент Абхазії Рауль Хаджимба, зі свого боку, попросив всі політичні сили провести референдум «гідно і не перетворювати його в вуличні заворушення і мітинги». 

Перед цим 5 липня в столиці Абхазії Сухумі під час мітингу опозиція вимагала перенесення референдуму на осінь. Під час акції протесту сталися заворушення, у результаті яких постраждали люди. 

Після російсько-грузинського військового конфлікту в серпні 2008 року, Росія окупувала два сепаратистські регіони Грузії – Абхазію і Південну Осетію. Суверенітет Абхазії визнали чотири держави-члени ООН – Росія, Нікарагуа, Венесуела і Науру.
