Основні політичні партії Македонії пристали на вимоги опозиції перенести дострокові парламентські вибори, раніше плановані 24 квітня, більш ніж на місяць – на 5 червня.

Законодавці вирішили відкласти процедуру офіційного розпуску парламенту, яка починає 60-денний відлік до виборів, в ніч на 23 лютого.

Це сталося після того, як основна опозиційна партія Соціал-демократичний союз Македонії (SDSM) пригрозила бойкотувати вибори через побоювання щодо зловживань.

Незадовго до голосування американський та європейський дипломати заявили про те, що влада Македонії не здійснила достатніх кроків для проведення чесних парламентських виборів.

Проведення дострокових парламентських виборів в Македонії є частиною домовленостей, досягнутих минулоріч за посередництва ЄС між урядом і опозицією задля врегулювання кількамісячного політичного протистояння, яке було викликане скандалом із прослуховуванням розмов урядовців.

Македонія є кандидатом на вступ до ЄС з 2005 року.
