Латвійський сейм обрав президентом країни Раймонда Вейоніса, який очолював до цього міністерство оборони країни.

На президентський пост претендували чотири кандидати. Для визначення переможця знадобилося п'ять раундів, оскільки у першому раунді абсолютної більшості голосів зібрати не зумів ніхто, і надалі кандидати вибували по одному,пише ВВС-Україна.

Латвія є парламентською республікою - президента в ній раз на чотири роки обирає сейм.

Раймонд Вейоніс стане п'ятим президентом Латвії з моменту проголошення її незалежності і змінить на цій посаді Андріса Берзиньша.
