Всесвітній день свободи преси був започаткований в 1992 році й щорічно відзначається 3 травня, пише Media Sapiens
 

Він схвалений Організацією Об'єднаних Націй з питань освіти, науки й культури (ЮНЕСКО) й покликаний нагадати, що тиск на свободу преси з боку влади є неприпустимим.

Глобальна мережа журналістів-розслідувачів (GIJN, Global Investigative Journalism Network) цього року нагадала про те, що демократія неможлива без розслідувальної журналістики.

«Незважаючи на роки зібрань та прокламацій ЮНЕСКО та інших партнерів, умови для журналістів у всьому світі погіршуються, а не змінюються на краще», - йдеться в заяві мережі. За оцінками GIJN, зараз кількість журналістів-розслідувачів значно зросла й вони мають більше ефективних інструментів для роботи.

«Не дивно, що ми зазнаємо атак, коли медіа викривають офшорні інвестиції, зловживання владою та марнотратства автократів, - пише GIJN. - Це може пояснити реакцію, з якою ми зіткнулися в багатьох країнах - навіть тих, які ми вважали відносно безпечними. Серйозні репортажі надходять з усіх куточків, починаючи від Перу та Пакистану до Уганди та України».

Організація ЮНЕСКО до Всесвітнього дня свободи преси випустила серію коротких відеороликів з відомими журналістами із різних країн світу. В одній із серій знявся й представник ОБСЄ з питань свободи ЗМІ Арлем Дезір (Harlem Desir).
