Президент Ісландії Олафур Рагнар Грімссон заявив, що має намір у червні балотуватися на шостий термін президентства поспіль.

На спеціальній прес-конференції він нагадав, що не збирався висувати свою кандидатуру. Однак, за словами президента, під тиском громадськості він вирішив переглянути свою позицію з цього приводу.

Олафур стверджує, що найрізноманітніші люди останнім часом зверталися до нього з проханням знову балотуватися в президенти, тому що бояться, що зміна президента незабаром після відставки прем'єра втягне країну в політичну кризу.

Прем'єр-міністр Ісландії Сігмундур Давид Гуннлаугссон пішов у відставку на початку квітня через скандал довкола "панамських документів". У них йшлося про те, що прем'єр і його дружина не задекларували свою офшорну фірму.

Президентські вибори призначені в Ісландії на червень. На пост глави держави претендують понад десять осіб. При цьому в країні немає обмежень на кількість президентських термінів для однієї людини, що дозволило чинному президенту залишатися незмінним главою держави з серпня 1996 року.
