Президент США побував у тюрмі посиленого режиму в місті Ель-Рено, штат Оклахома.

Йому показали камеру 9 на 10 футів (2,7 на 3 метри). В ній - койка та розкладачка, капці та уніформи кольору хакі, туалет і раковина, закріплені в кутку, а також нічна тумбочка з журналами, книгами та словником на ній.

Обама постояв там з хвилинку. Офіцер-тюремник та директор Управління тюрем США розповіли йому, що в такій камері живе троє ув’язнених.

Також президент поспілкувався з шістьма ув’язненими, які засуджені за злочини, пов’язані з наркотиками. Вони розповіли йому свої історії. Розмову ув’язнених з Обамою покажуть у вересні в документальному фільмі на телеканалі HBO.

Обама лобіює реформу пенітенціарної системи. Журналістам він сказав, що хоча тюрма в Ель-Рено й чудова, але навіть вона страждає від переповнення та затісних камер.
