Обама планирует совершить тур по отступающему из-за климатических изменений леднику и встретиться с жителями отдаленных арктических общин.
Пик был назван в честь 25-го президента США Уильяма Мак-Кинли в 1896 году, сразу после его победы на выборах. Однако коренные жители Аляски задолго до этого называли гору Денали, что означает «Величайшая».
С 1975 года власти штата официально стали именовать гору Денали. Все это время Аляска убеждала федеральное правительство сделать то же самое.
С 1799 по 1867 год эта гора, в период русской колонизации Аляски называвшаяся Большой горой, была самой высокой в Российской империи. 30 марта 1867 года Аляска была продана США. Впервые пик был нанесен на карту Фердинандом фон Врангелем в 1839 году.
