Депутати Європейського парламенту обрали своїм новим головою італійського депутата Антоніо Таяні.

Про це повідомляє брюссельське видання Politico.

За підсумками четвертого раунду виборів, що проходили в таємному режимі, він отримав 351 голос , що становить просту більшість від тих, хто взяв бюлетені. Його конкурент, також італійський депутат Джанні Пітелла отримав 282 голоси.

 
 

Таяні представляє найбільшу групу Європейського парламента, правоцентристську Європейську народну партію (ЄНП). Він є однопартійцем екс-прем’єра Сільвіо Берлусконі.У 2008-2014 роках був єврокомісаром, опікувався питаннями транспорту, промисловості та підприємництва.

Позиція Таяні щодо України наразі невідома. Водночас, групу ЄНП вважають однією з "проукраїнських" у складі ЄП.

Європейський парламент має досить обмежені повноваження у питаннях зовнішньої політики, однак бере участь у затвердженні всіх регламентів ЄС, включаючи рішення про скасування віз для України. 

Посада президента ЄП стала вакантною після відставки Мартіна Шульца, який оголосив про повернення у німецьку політику.
