Кожні чотири роки в календарі країн світу, які використовують григоріанський календар, з'являється 29 лютого. Оскільки 2016 рік є високосним, пошуковик Google присвятив дудл сьогоднішньому дню.

Вперше високосний день був заснований в 45 році до н.е. римським імператором Гаєм Юлієм Цезарем. Саме він оголосив, що кожен четвертий рік повинен мати 365,25 днів. Головною умовою для введення нового календаря було те, що день весняного рівнодення починався в один і той же день.

Григоріанський календар був введений Папою Римським Григорієм ХІІІ у 1582 році. Україна перейшла на нього 16 лютого 1918 року.

Навіть якщо в документах у народженого 29 лютого вказується цей день, дні народження такої людини святкуються зазвичай в кінці лютого і/або початку березня, а не раз на чотири роки.
