Міжнародний кримінальний трибунал у Гаазі визнав винним у військових злочинах конголезького політика Жана-П'єра Бемба і засудив того до 18 років в'язниці.

Міжнародний кримінальний суд у вівторок ухвалив рішення у справі про геноцид у Центрально-Африканській Республіці у 2002-03 роках.

Таким чином, як відзначає агенція, Бемба, колишній віце-президент Демократичної Республіки Конго, став першим чиновником, який нестиме відповідальність за злочини своїх підлеглих.

Суддя Сільвія Штайнер постановила, що війська з руху за звільнення Конго, якими керував Бемба, діяли "з особливою жорстокістю", коли вони вели бойові дії в сусідній країні на підтримку тодішнього президента Анжа-Фелікса Патассе.

"Бемба озброїв свої війська і потім платив їм так мало, що вони були займалися грабунком місцевого населення", – повідомила Штайнер.

"Він зробив лише символічні спроби дисциплінувати їх, щоб відвернути увагу міжнародного співтовариства від злочинів", – додала суддя міжнародного суду.

Бемба, який відмовився говорити під час слухань, отримав три терміни: на 18 років за зґвалтування і грабіж, і два терміни по 16 років за вбивство. Всі вироки будуть виконуватися одночасно.
