Розробники запевняють, що SMS не будуть проходити через сервери Facebook, а використовуватимуть стандартні засоби мобільного зв'язку. Головним завданням нової функції є дати можливість користувачам спілкуватися з різними людьми через один додаток.
 
Іншою перевагою Messenger стала можливість відправляти в SMS дані про геолокацію, стикери і смайли-емодзі.
 
 
Вартість відправки текстових повідомлень через Messenger тарифікується за звичайною вартістю SMS оператора зв'язку користувача. Діалоги за допомогою мобільного зв'язку будуть відображатися фіолетовим кольором, в той час як для стандартних інтернет-бесід зберігатиметься дизайн у блакитному кольоровому оформленні.
 
Messenger можна перепризначити для відправки та отримання SMS замість стандартного вбудованого додатка на смартфонах на базі Android. Реалізації такої функціональності на iOS від Apple перешкоджає відсутність можливості вибору програми для роботи із SMS.
