У своїй офіційній заяві Байден зазначив, що не втручався в процеси Міністерства юстиції, але вважає, що його сина переслідують вибірково та несправедливо. Він підкреслив, що обвинувачення були висунуті під тиском політичних опонентів, які намагалися використати цю справу для атаки на нього.

Байден висловив сподівання, що американці зрозуміють його рішення про помилування, підкресливши, що вважає систему правосуддя важливою, але вважає, що політичний тиск вплинув на справедливість процесу.

 

Байден-молодший за матеріалами обвинувачення, протягом чотирьох років не сплатив $1,4 млн податків із доходів.
