Хоча Трамп поки офіційно не оголосив про намір брати участь у виборах 2028 року, він публічно припускав, що може це зробити. Балотування на третій термін порушить 22-гу поправку до Конституції США, за якою «жодна людина не може бути обрана на посаду президента більше ніж два рази».

Однак Трамп відкидав цю ідею. У квітні 2024 року він сказав журналу Time, що не хотів би балотуватися знову. Тим часом третина американців в опитуваннях кажуть, що не хочуть третього президентства Трампа.
