Музей сучасного мистецтва в Нью-Йорку (MoMA) додав до своєї колекції 176 перших значків емодзі, пише Media Sapiens
 

Значки емодзі були розроблені японським оператором зв'язку NTT в 1999 році. Пол Галловей (Paul Galloway), спеціаліст відділу дизайну в MoMA прокоментувавпоповнення музею так: «Ці маленькі зображення, розміром всього 12 на 12 пікселів, справжні шедеври дизайну, вони стали основою для вибухового зростання нової візуальної мови».

Протягом багатьох років емодзі були в значній мірі явищем японської культури. Все змінилося в 2010 році, коли вони були включені до складу міжнародного обчислювального стандарту, відомого як Unicode.  На практиці це означає, що японський користувач може відправити будь-який значок емодзі іншому користувачеві в будь-кий куточок світу і отримувач бачитиме такий самий символ, як і відправник.  В 2011 році, Apple включив Emoji до клавіатури в мессенджер ОС IOS на iPhone, що додало значкам ще більшої популярності.

Як писав MediaSapiens, користувач Twitter з ніком @BibleEmoji переклав Біблію на мову емодзі.

Також у листопаді 2015 Оксфордський словник традиційно назвав слово року: уперше в історії ним стала піктограма-смайлик.
