Дослідники вивчали, як доступ до ефірного російського телебачення в трьох прикордонних областях України, вплинув на електоральні переваги жителів 3600 сіл. У деяких селах сигнал російського телебачення ловиться, а в сусідніх - ні.

Колишній киянин, автор дослідження Леонід Пейсахін, професор Нью-Йоркського Університету в Абу-Дабі пояснює: "Російське телебачення потрапляє в деякі села випадково і таким чином ми можемо порівняти людей, які нічим іншим один від одного не відрізняються. Ми вивчаємо поведінку на президентських і парламентських виборах 2014-го року і знаходимо таке: у тих селах, куди російський сигнал випадковим чином потрапляє, люди голосують за проросійські партії на 12% більше, ніж в тих, куди не потрапляє"
.
У цілому дослідження Нью-Йоркського університету підтверджує: російське телебачення впливає на поведінку частини українських громадян і поляризує українське суспільство.
