17 травня 2017 року міністерство юстиції США призначило Роберта Мюллера на посаду спеціального прокурора для розслідування втручання Росії в президентські вибори США 2016 года.

Згідно з документами, він має повноваження розслідувати спроби російського уряду вплинути на результати президентської кампані, а також зв'язки або координацію між Росією і будь-якими особами, пов'язаними з передвиборчим штабом Дональда Трампа.

Розслідування призвело до того, що політичному піарнику Полу Манафорту, який певний час очолював передвиборний штаб Трампа, були оголошені звинувачення - зокрема, у приховуванні доходів від роботи з Партією регіонів. Його підозрюють у встановленні незаконних зв'язків виборчого штабу Трампа з представниками російської влади. 

Колишній радник з питань національної безпеки Білого дому Майкл Флінн визнав себе винним у тому, що "не повністю поінформував віце-президента Майка Пенса та інших про свої розмови з послом Росії". Він пішов у відставку після оприлюдненої в ЗМІ інформації про його таємні зустрічі з російським дипломатом.

У лютому 2018 року було висунуто звинувачення 13 російським громадянам, які працювали на так званій "фабриці тролів" та поширювали брехливу інформацію про Гілларі Клінтон
