За даними американської розвідки, Росія намагається втрутитися в майбутні американські вибори. Вказується, що президенту РФ Володимиру Путіну вигідно, щоб президентом США переобрали Дональда Трампа або сенатора Берні Сандерса, який лідирує на кокусах серед демократів.

У NYT стверджують, що ці кандидати більше націлені на внутрішню політику США, а не на зовнішню, що дозволить Росії зміцнити свої позиції в світі.

Автор статті приходить до висновку, що незалежно від того, кого оберуть, Путін, ймовірно, підірвав одну зі своїх основних цілей: змусити Сполучені Штати та її союзників скасувати міжнародні санкції, які були введені після анексії Криму та військової агресії проти України.

За словами колишнього офіцера національної розвідки в Росії Анджели Стент, якщо РФ дійсно буде втручатися у вибори США 2020 року, "це може призвести до нових енергетичних санкцій".
