Власти Объединенных Арабских Эмиратов установили жесткие наказания для людей, ругающихся в интернете.

Отныне оскорбление в интернете приравнивается к киберпреступлениям. Гражданам ОАЭ за него грозит наказание в виде тюремного заключения и денежного штрафа до 250 тысяч дирхамов (около $67 тыс.), а иностранцев могут выслать из страны.

Первой жертвой нового закона стал гражданин Эмиратов, пославший "оскорбительные слова" коллеге через приложение WhatsApp. Первоначально суд приговорил его к штрафу в $780, но Верховный суд в Абу-Даби отменил это наказание как слишком мягкое. Теперь по его делу назначат новые слушания.

В июне 2012 года за "за богохульные речи, поношение религии и правителей Королевства" был арестован саудовский журналист и блогер Рауф Бадави. В мае 2014 года его приговорили к 10 годам тюрьмы, штрафу и тысяче ударов плетью. 7 июня 2015 года суд принял решение о возобновлении наказания плетьми с 12 июня.
