Президент Казахстана Нурсултан Назарбаев подписал указ о проведении досрочных выборов главы государства.

Ранее, 14 февраля члены совета Ассамблеи народа Казахстана заявила о том, что в условиях тяжелой обстановки в мире Назарбаеву "необходимо дать новый мандат общенациональной доверия".

Очередной срок полномочий Назарбаева, возглавившего Казахстан после распада СССР, заканчивается в 2016 году. По конституции страны, одно и то же лицо не может быть избрано президентом более двух раз подряд, однако это ограничение не распространяется на первого главу государства.
