Президентом Швейцарії на наступний рік обрали консерватора Гі Пармелена.

Гі Пармелен змінить Симонетту Зоммаругу 1 січня на посаді президента Швейцарії. Він є членом Федеральної ради з 2016 року.

Пармелен був обраний 188 голосами з 202 дійсних бюлетенів. Це на два голоси більше, ніж у Симонетти Зоммаруги на її виборах в минулому році.

Президента Швейцарії обирають за принципом "перший серед рівних" серед членів уряду. Кожен міністр стає президентом не рідше одного разу на сім років на один рік.

Президент Швейцарії не є главою держави, оскільки функції глави держави виконують колективно всі члени Федеральної ради.

Однак президентський голос є вирішальним при обговоренні питань на рівні уряду.
