Колишній кандидат у президенти США, 80-річний сенатор-республіканець Джон Маккейн переніс операцію з видалення тромбу з очної ділянки. Під час процедури лікарі клініки Mayo в Аризоні виявили у політика гліобластому - агресивну форму злоякісної пухлини, спричиненої раком головного мозку. Про це у середу, 19 липня, повідомили в офісі сенатора, передає DW.COM

Лікарі Маккейна заявляють, що сенатор напрочуд добре відновлюється після операції, передає агенція Reuters. Очікується, що онкологічне захворювання йому лікуватимуть за допомогою хіміо- та радіаційної терапії. Утім, у медицині вважається, що гліобластоми є одними з найнебезпечніших пухлин, адже вони можуть пускати метастази в мозок, які дуже важко виявити. Сам політик, за словами колег, зберігає оптимізм та обіцяє повернутися до роботи, додає агентство новин AP.

На діагноз Маккейна уже відреагували в Білому домі. Президент США Дональд Трамп заявив, що Маккейн "завжди був бійцем" та зичить йому одужання. Під час передвиборчої кампанії, утім, республіканець не раз критикував Маккейна, зокрема ставив під сумнів статус сенатора як героя війни у В'єтнамі.

Маккейн, нагадаємо, служив пілотом у флоті США, під час війни він потрапив у полон, де провів п'ять з половиною років. В Україні Маккейн відомий як один із американських політиків, які активно підтримували протести в Києві взимку 2013-2014 років, а також як сенатор із жорсткою позицією щодо дій Москви.
