Передавачі BBC в Таїланді припинили роботу з 1 січня 2017 року, коли закінчився термін дії угоди між мовником та владою країни.
 

Після того, як BBC не вдалося домовитися про продовження роботи, радіослужба оголосила про те, що вона змушена закрити передавачі в Таїланді, пише Media Sapiens з посиланням на Bangkok Post. Закриття короткохвильового передавача може привести до звільнення до 45 співробітників. Водночас BBC має намір розвивати мовлення в FM-діапазоні, а також збільшувати свою присутність через інтернет і телеефіри.

Британська телерадіомовна компанія висловила жаль з приводу того, що сторонам не вдалося досягнути згоди, «що дозволило б використовувати передавач для поширення достовірних і об'єктивних новин слухачам в цьому регіоні».

Раніше The Guardian писав про розслідування, яке почала влада Таїланду щодо компанії через підозри в образі монархії. Причиною стала публікація на сайті місцевої служби BBC, яка містила інформацію про нового короля Маху Вачиралонгкорна.

Нагадаємо, Таїланд заблокував близько 100 YouTube-сторінок за образу монархії. Влада Таїланду назвала це «спільними зусиллями з блокування за підтримки Google».
