Повідомляється, що фінансують їх рекламні агентства, які працюють на відомі бренди, такі як Audi, Honda, American Airlines, OfficeMax тощо.

Бренди не замислюються над тим, кому вони платять за інтернет-рекламу, а керівництво компаній-замовників в основному не поінформоване про те, на яких сайтах може з'явитися їх реклама. Відбувається це тому, що більша частина онлайн-реклами тепер розміщується «програмно». Щоразу, коли ми завантажуємо веб-сторінку, відбувається миттєвий аукціон, щоб продати рекламне місце за найвищою ціною.

Результати дослідження базуються на вибірці з більше ніж 1700 відомих дезінформаційних доменів.

За оцінками дослідників, технологічний гігант Google обслуговує 70% дезінформаційних сайтів, забезпечуючи 37% їх доходу. AppNexus обслуговує 8% майданчиків дезінформації і забезпечує 25% доходу. Серед інших великих гравців на ринку інтернет-послуг, пов'язаних з поширенням дезінформації, - Amazon, Criteo, OpenX, The Rubicon Project і The Trade Desk.
