Мальтійську політичну діячку Роберту Мецолу у вівторок, 18 січня, обрали новою президенткою Європарламенту замість Давида Сассолі, який несподівано помер 11 січня у віці 65 років.

Про це повідомила пресслужба Європейського парламенту.

За Мецолу, що представляє Європейську народну партію, проголосували 458 євродепутатів з 606 присутніх.

Вона була заступницею Сассолі і почала виконувати обов'язки президентки Європарламенту після його смерті.

Крім неї, на посаду претендували Аліс Кунке ("зелені", Швеція), Косма Злотовський ("консерватори й реформісти", Польща), Сіра Рего (Європейські об'єднані ліві, Іспанія).

Роберта Мецола має 43 роки.

Вона є членкинею Європейського парламенту з 2013 року. З листопада 2020 року була першою заступницею президента Європарламенту.
