Президент Болгарії Румен Радев визначив 2 жовтня як дату четвертих парламентських виборів у країні менш ніж за два роки після розвалу в червні коаліційного уряду прем'єр-міністра-реформатора Кирила Петкова.

Радев також призначив колишнього міністра праці Галаба Донєва керівником тимчасового уряду в час коли Болгарія стикається зі стрімкою інфляцією, сумнівами в постачанні газу та іншими наслідками розв’язаної Росією війни проти України.

Тимчасовий уряд працюватиме з 2 серпня до формування нового уряду після позачергових виборів.

Очікується, що тимчасовий кабінет займе більш м’яку позицію щодо Москви, яка може включати зусилля щодо відновлення імпорту російського газу. Він також може спробувати налагодити стосунки з Москвою після того, як уряд Петкова видворив 70 російських співробітників дипломатичних установ через підозри у шпигунстві.

Політична криза в Болгарії почалася у червні, коли популістська партія "Є такий народ" вийшла з чотирипартійної правлячої коаліції. Опозиційна партія ГЕРБ на чолі з колишнім прем'єр-міністром Бойком Борисовим ініціювала вотум недовіри, і уряд Кирила Петкова було відправлено у відставку.

Найбільша партія у парламенті — "Зміни продовжуються" — намагалася сформувати новий уряд, але не змогла зібрати 121 депутата і вирішила не пропонувати новий уряд.
